Looking Ahead – Day 3 of the Joule Donegal International Rally

10.05.2021

How Dramatic Day Two Panned Out…

Day Two of the Joule Donegal International Rally saw no shortage of drama and excitement, with several participants crashing out, all thankfully walking away from their cars, Declan and Brian Boyle among them. Rally stalwarts Ian Barrett and Kevin Gallagher also saw an early exit from the racing. Joe and Richard Connolly’s crash was caught on video and while it was dramatic, it was good to see them both walking away.

The eight stages of action on Day Two, covering over 170KM, saw Sam Moffatt and James Fulton take the lead, with Gary Jennings and Rory Kennedy coming in second. As it stands, Sam Moffatt now leads overall ahead of Craig Breen and Paul Nagle, In third placeoverall sits Callum Devine with Jennings and Kennedy in fourth place.

In the National Rally, Ryan Loughran came in in front of Damien Tourish and he’ll be looking to maintain that lead on Sunday.

However it pans out, a seriously exciting day lies ahead for Sunday’s racing.

Day Three – What to Expect?

All eyes will be on Sam Moffatt who leads Craig Breen with just over 17 seconds to spare. Callum Devine in third place, reckons it’s “very fast for us…but we’re just going to keep her lit!” Gary Jennings’ showing on Day Two puts him in fourth place overall but we could expect good things from him today and he could be one to watch.

With rain forecast, things might heat up for the 103 remaining crews as they take on the last 96KM of varied terrain. Atlantic Drive, Fanad and Port Lake, the latter being included again after a few years off the map, will provide some of the best rallying to be seen over the weekend, no matter whether the weather decides to cooperate or not!

Keeping Safe and Sound

A great day is expected for spectators too, with record numbers turning out. With huge crowds lining the route, marshalls, Gardai and organisers are reminding everyone to take care, listen to stewards and above all, have a ball! Don’t forget to park your car well away from junctions and keep an eye on children and younger rally enthusiasts. Here’s to a great day.  We’ll be keeping an ear out for Oisín Kelly and the Highland Radio crew, who’ve been giving us top rally coverage over the weekend.
